Assessment at Sheringham Woodfields School

Over the past year, we have been working diligently to revamp our assessment
frameworks, drawing upon the assessment objectives from the Early Years Foundation
Stage (EYFS) and National Curriculum as well as other relevant developmental
frameworks. As a result, we have developed new assessment systems tailored to our
school’s unique needs and requirements.

In the areas of Maths and English, we have introduced a step-based assessment system
ranging from step 1 to step 12. This framework has been used to assess all pupils across
the school, providing a comprehensive evaluation of their progress in these core
subjects.

For foundation subjects, we have established a step-based assessment system ranging
from step 7 to step 12. These frameworks are specifically designed for pupils who are
ready to engage in subject-specific learning, allowing us to track their achievements
and growth in these areas.

We believe that these new assessment frameworks will provide a more accurate
understanding of your child’s progress, strengths, and areas for development in line
with national expectations.

Some of our pupils are working at a level where they are not yet able or ready to
engage in subject-specific learning. To ensure that we accurately assess their progress,
we have implemented the Engagement Model. This model does not provide numerical
data; instead, it focuses on how pupils interact and engage with the world around them.
It considers five different areas of engagement: Exploration, Realisation, Anticipation,
Persistence, and Initiation. Through using this approach, pupils with complex needs can
experience meaningful progress, increased engagement, and improved overall outcomes
in their educational journey.

In addition to the assessment methods mentioned above, I would like to highlight that
we also assess all of our pupils against their individual Education, Health, and Care Plan
(EHCP) outcomes. These outcomes are broken down by the pupils’ teachers into small
steps known as Personalised Learning Goals (PLGs). Throughout the year, we carefully
monitor and assess each pupil’s progress towards these goals, ensuring that we provide
tailored support and interventions to help them achieve their individual targets. This
comprehensive approach allows us to address the specific needs of each child and track
their progress in line with their EHCP outcomes.

By incorporating all of the above assessment methods, we can gain a holistic
understanding of your child’s development and provide targeted support to help them
thrive academically, physically, socially, and emotionally.
