Find some animal soft toys, plastic toys and/or books with animals in. Model the animal sounds for your child while you play or read together. Observe their responses. Do they respond differently when you make low sounds (e.g. pig grunt, lion roar) versus high pitched sounds (like a bird whistling/tweeting)? Do they have favourite animal sounds that they consistently respond positively to? Let us know in the home/school book!
Encourage your child to use their voice to make sounds while you play, too.

Problem Solving | We will be singing number songs that feature animals, such as 5 Little Monkeys, 5 Little Ducks and 5 Little Speckled Frogs. We will be watching videos of these number songs and also singing them in class with props to count, add and remove. | You could practise singing these number songs at home, too.

Exploration | We will be exploring lots of different messy play linked to animals and their habitats. This will include water and plastic fish, ice cubes and toy penguins and dry cereals and farm animals.
| You could have a go at making a messy play farm at home. Explore plastic farm animals in crumbled up shredded wheat, dry porridge oats, cold porridge or brown gloop (1 part water to 2 parts cornflour with a little cocoa powder to make it mud coloured).
For a less messy exploration session at home, you could add sea creature toys to the bath.

Stories and Books
| In the sensory room this half term, we will be sharing story sacks, books and props about animals, including Owl Babies, What the Ladybird Heard and Farmyard Hullabaloo.
We will be reading a range of books together in the library each week, also doing 1-1 reading with each pupil.
| You could visit your local library to borrow picture books, board books, tactile books, noisy books and story sacks featuring animals. |
Orientation, Movement and Mobility: Physio
| We will practise our physical skills using walkers, A frames, reaching out and exploring or moving ourselves around the classroom and school. We will be doing hydrotherapy, rebound therapy and physio stretches and exercises.
| You could do some physio exercises with your child at home. Write a note in the home/school book if you would like a copy of the physio exercises we do with your child in school. |
ICT | We will be using switches, iPads, touch screen and the Interactive Floor to work on our cause and effect skills
| You could explore some cause and effect toys at home with your child

Creative | In our creative sessions this half term we will be making various animal-themed art, such as bubble wrap fish tank, paper plate pigs and hedgehogs with spikes created with forks dipped in brown paint
| You could make an egg box caterpillar with your child. You could offer choices as to which colours to use, whether to add any glitter/sequins and whether to use their hands or a paintbrush to apply the paint

Social and Emotional
| We will join with Alder class for some social play time on a Tuesday morning.
On a Friday afternoon, we will be doing animal themed massage with props and sensory lights.

Community Awareness | During this half term we hope to have a trip to Amazona Zoo and are hoping to have some animal visitors come to Rowan class. More information to follow.
